My life has been an incredible journey that I would love to share with you. I was
born with a very rare heart defect. Shortly after my birth my Mom was told to
prepare for my sudden death. Doctors gave me a zero chance of survival at the
age of 2 months
old and this continued up until the hours before my Heart-Double lung transplant
almost 36 years later. My lungs and heart were in the final stages of failing when
Surgeons opened my chest for the transplant.
7 weeks before my 36th birthday I was given the
MIRACLE and GIFT of LIFE.
Doctors discovered that I was born with only half of my heart. My heart had two
chambers instead of the four that most everyone else has. The center wall
of my heart was missing. My heart then began to destroy my lungs and that
damage was not reversible or repairable. Doctor after doctor discouraged my
Mother from having any hope day after day. Doctors at UCLA Medical
Center (2007) and Stanford Medical Center 2004) confirmed to my Mother and
me that more than 95 % of the children that were born with my particular heart
defect didn't survive to 5 months old. Only a very few of us in the small number
of survivors made it into adult life.
My heart rate has raced over 350 beats per minute and my body turned
transparent from a lack of oxygen. The oxygen levels dropped so low for most
of my life (Sat. Levels of 22 to 70) that doctors just shook their heads in disbelief
and waited for me to take my last breath. Again doctors were puzzled that I was
conscious, talking and surviving. I was going to school, learning to snorkel on
the reefs in the Keys, fishing and living life to make each and every day count.
My Mom was told from the time I was 2 months old to give up on me...to let go
and let me die. I am so thankful she didn't. She gave me all of the love a Mom
would give to her child and more. She didn't talk about me dying...instead she
filled my life with as many wonderful experiences as possible. I had
experiences that often are only dreamed about. She made difficult choices that
often cost her fulfilling her own dreams. I had the best medical care possible
because of her. That is what it took so that I might have a chance to live. My Mom
dedicated her life to me and my having the best life she could give me.
